Hello Harish,
This is a great question! There is a lot of pressure on students to absorb lots of material quickly. It can be very stressful especially when there is limited time. I know how that feels going through University and Graduate school. I used some of the techniques below to read a book effectively:
First, free your environment of any distractions such as turning off the TV, music, phone, or anything else that would distract you. Also, make sure you are comfortable, so you can be focused on reading such as not being hungry, hot, cold, etc.
Then, set some obtainable steps to reach your overall goal of reading the entire book to keep yourself focused and engaged in the material like reading the chapter or certain amount of pages by a certain date/time, being able to understand the main argument, or recalling certain information.
Start by reading through the introduction and conclusion of the text to get an understanding of the main themes of the chapter/book. Skim through the table of contents of the chapters and through the texts and diagrams/illustrations to get a basis of the chapter. As a result, you will be able to focus on the main topics and key points being made.
Make sure to be engaged with what you are reading. If you have trouble focusing, try to read aloud so you are really focusing or move you fingers along the sentences to help guide you and keep your place. In addition, since you are getting tested on the material, skim through the material to get an overall understanding of the book and then read the textbook more carefully by making an outline and taking notes of the main topics.
Last, make sure to take short effective breaks. This will help you take a mental break from reading to re-energize yourself and make it easier to read. Make sure to set time limits and limit the amount of breaks, but it is important to rest and refresh yourself from time to time.
Good luck with studying and reading the textbooks! Keep up the good work! reading books advice general-advice
