Is wanting to be a doctor despite mediocre test scores too ambitious?

I am a senior in High school who wishes to pursue a career in the medical field. However, I wasn't the best student academically because I chose to procrastinate. I do not doubt my ability to work hard and I strongly believe in myself. Still, it's nice to hear other's opinion on matter. #career #education #school #general

Doing poorly in high school doesn't mean you can't go to medical school. When applying they won't look at your high school years at all. All medical school's care about is how you do in college. It is very competitive to get into medical school though, you will have to have a high GPA and score well on the MCAT entrance exam in order to get accepted. You will also need leadership experience, volunteer work, research, and physician shadowing. But so long as you can create good study habits, commit to studying and not procrastinate, and are willing to put in the hard work during college to do well, you can definitely go to medical school!

Hi Tatyana, Being ambitious is an excellent quality to have. At this point in your life you can set your sight on anything, any career the sky is the limit. What is really great here is that you recognize what you need to improve on and you believe in yourself! I say go for your career choice in the medical field. Look at today and beyond as your opportunity to start anew. As a High School Senior your college path has really already begun. The medical field maybe a little tough, but if you are passionate about it and remain disciplined you will be successful.

Hey Tatyana!

The medical field is really tough and very academically challenging with many years of study. That said, it doesn't mean you're doomed if you did poorly in high school :)

Just correct those study habits and be willing to hit the books. You have to really want it and be passionate about it beyond the money. You have to actually care. It's funny to say something like that, but it's entirely true once you've gotten a few years of college under your belt. I would take some initial courses in Biology, Genetics, and Organic Chemistry to feel out how you like it. If its not for you, no big deal! Discover your other passions. There's a million things to do outside of medicine. Good luck!
