Becoming a licensed architect usually takes between 6 - 10 years, and the path is similar to that of a lawyer or a doctor. However, this does not mean you won't be doing any architecture before that.
Let's start at the beginning: a bachelors in architecture takes 5 years, as Wael said. A masters in architecture is 3 years. After you graduate, you will need to log 3 years worth of internship hours while working for a registered architect. You also need to pass the ARE tests, of which there are 6. Some states let you do this at any time, others make you wait until you've graduated, or finished your internship hours.
However, if you don't want to be licensed, you could just get a job at an architecture firm and dive in. This would be hard to do without a degree in architecture, but it is possible.
