Should I go along with a predesignated freshman program or explore on my own?

My future college has a freshman course that gives a broad introduction to college and what it has to offer. I'm just wondering if I should take this class or trek on my own, develop my own perspective.... #counselor #college-student

Nancy’s Answer

Tatyana, the advantages of following the prescribed freshman course is that professionals have designed a broad-based program for you. It is possible that you will be surprised how much you like a certain course, or how less interesting it is to you than you expected. That is normal and helpful in either case. Exposure to math and language arts is important for many future majors. I suggest taking what is recommended and then using the opportunity for electives later to explore once you have a bit more focus and experience.

David’s Answer

Tatyana, I would say to take advantage of the offered course. Personally I have made lasting connections with people I met at the beginning of my college career. Plus you will have plenty of times to develop your own perspective and philosophy as you navigate through school. I wish you the best and hope I shared something that will benefit you!!
