It's very difficult to tell, but without a Graduate Scheme where you 'jump' from uni student to manager, the entry-level salaries are mostly basic. The positive thing is that it is very easy to get promoted if you work hard. In hotels rotations of employees are so fast that sometimes you need months to already get noticed. Although I would suggest trying to get accepted for a Graduate Scheme or tailoring some unique skills (like HR) to start from "Assistant" position rather than the very basic. If you want to know more about salaries, I recommend using a website called "Glassdoor" where you can find also reviews of the employees.

Hi Shannon!

Here is a list of hotels in Rockwall. If you go to talk to the manager of each of these hotels, you will get some very helpful information. These are the people to talk to as they will be very willing to give a student good career advice. Go for it:

The salaries vary largely between cities and roles. Typically, larger cities pay more than rural areas, and property managers make less than asset managers.

If you know where you will want to live and/or what role you will pursue, use a site like www.glassdoor.com to look up the title and location to estimate starting salaries.

Be sure that you are looking at starting salaries AND salaries after five years. Often, roles that pay less at the beginning, like a front office supervisor, can be pathways to bigger positions if you prove yourself, like a Front Office Manager or Assistant General Manager position. However positions that start a bit higher, like an accounting analyst, don't grow much for a longer time. Similarly, a coordinator in a sales office might start with a very low salary, but if you can move into a sales or marketing role, those have some of the higher pay structures if you are a good sales person because of commission. Once you can be sure that your basic needs will be met, and that you will be making enough to put a few hundred dollars into savings each month, additional earnings beyond that dollar figure are less important than learning at this point in your career.

It is also important to consider benefits. If you will be a manager at the hotel and expected to wear a suit, will the hotel provide dry cleaning or will you be on your own for that? If the hotel provides free employee meals this can be an enormous cost savings to you.
