For a person with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, how long does it take to find a job in the current job market? and how smooth is the transition form college life to this job setting?
I am currently a high school senior at Boca Raton Community High School, and have been accepted at Florida Atlantic University and I hope to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. #engineer #mechanical-engineer

You ask good questions and the answer to most questions is that it depends. Phillip is correct that the economy and experience is a big factor. Where you go to school, your grades, your elective classes, and what you do outside of class also matters. As a hiring manager, I look for passion and how you have demonstrated that passion. Your elective classes and your projects should show that. If you are going into design, I also look for good understanding of engineering fundamentals.
For the second question about transition from college to work. That is different for everyone and it may depend on the company culture as well. I did not find the transition difficult. But if you have issues with morning classes, or getting your assignments in on time, it will be more difficult for you in the work place.

The economy changes so fast that it is hard to predict three to four years down the road. I would suggest that while you are in school, try to get an intern with company in your area that maybe looking to hire you after school. Start networking, get connected to your company by volunteering when you can. Talk to working professionals in your area to see if there opportunity for your to volunteer. Go out of your way to prove to them why they should hire you once your get your degree. Check with your advisers at FAU. They should have a pretty good network of alumni.
