My girlfriend started her college career wanting to be a doctor. At some point in her junior year of college she decided the pressure was not for her. She completed her biomed degree with a focus in microbiology and started doing lab research out of school. After 6 months she decided this also wasn't for her, and switched to work in clinical trial management. She loves what she does and has a great salary.
All of this is a roundabout way to say medicine is a vast field with so many different aspects. And a general degree can get you started in pursuing many different careers. Go for medicine and you wont be disappointed. If at some point you do not like one thing, there are many other options in the industry.
