Counselors

I like helping people and I love to give advice so I thought about being a high school counselor or something along those lines would be a career path for me. I just don't know what a counselor would major/minor in or the process it takes to become one. Anyone who knows anything would be a huge help! #high-school #counselor

Hi Terrie! I felt the same way when I was in college and decided to be an academic advisor. I majored in Sociology and minored in Education. I also got my masters in Social Work. You do not need a specific major to become a counselor during your undergraduate career. Sociology, Psychology, Communications, Mental Health, etc. are common majors if In order to be a Guidance Counselor or Academic Advisor you will have to get your Masters in Counseling, School Counseling, Higher Education, etc. If you like to help people and give advice you can do so many different things. For example, case management for foster care prevention, therapist, substance abuse counselor, geriatric social worker, marriage and family clinician etc. It will be best to figure out what population you will like to work with, this is very important. Do you like working with children, teenagers, college students, elderly? Some things you won't be able to answer now but through volunteer, work, and internships throughout college you will be able to figure it out. Best of luck!
