When getting/applying for a job, does being good-looking help you on getting hired?

I'm a chemical engineering student in my senior year. In engineering, most guys in engineering don't really care about their appearance but they are definitely very intelligent. Aside from surviving the classes, I'm very physically active and i like to dress very clean. I want to know if all of my sacrifice may pay off and might inspire engineers to take care of themselves for it will also help in getting a job. #engineer #job #interviews #fitness #exercise #hire #applying

Dennis’s Answer

Most companies screen candidates for qualifications and only interview those that seem to be qualified for the position. One of the unique characteristics about each candidate that sets them apart is how they look in person. Neat, clean and appropriate attire and grooming are important in making a good first impression. However, one's demeanor, how they present themselves and who they are as a person are equally if not more important. Presenting yourself as confident in your abilities yet humble goes a long way. Being genuine, who you really are, is also important, as are demonstrating that you can communicate effectively and work well with others.

Syed’s Answer

What would be your reaction or perception about a guy who is not neat, Smart & clean?
That's exactly the answer, as human being we tend to make perception of people within 1 min of meeting anyone. ( First impression is the best)

And your appearance does play a major role in that.

Having said that, an interviewer will never reject a deserving candidate just because he doesn't look good.

However if i am an interviewer and i have to select a guy out of the 2 guys ( both equally deserving) but one guy is disciplined, smartly dressed & neat compared to the other one. I will go with the first option.

So if you read my last sentence carefully, you would realize the guy got through to the final round based on his knowledge/competencies and not looks.

Thank you comment icon Thank you for being very honest and thorough ur advice definitely helped me and my friends out a lot. Cristian
