Yasemin’s Answer

Hi Daniela! I think inspiration for the medical field can come from many sources, sometimes acting together and sometimes just one that's enough. For me it was my grandmother's illness, she had dementia and it exposed me to care and the academics of medicine. After I kept pursuing the dream, I like to volunteer in the ER and help patients, I love to study and even became a tutor in the sciences and I did a little research and shadowing as well. I think it begins with an inspiration but then dedication and hard work build resilience in pursuing your dreams even when facing obstacles. Think about what makes you like science and medicine; maybe a volunteer opportunity or an anatomy lab or a more personal experience. Whatever it is, let it speak to you and be honest about it, remember it's not a clear cut path and can have many differences between prospective doctors!

Best of luck!

Philomena’s Answer

At a very little age i started to get that burning desire to be a doctor. The first thing i could think of by then was to get good grades in all my examinations and focusing more on biology. it was not easy at all but perseverance kept me going. Whilst applying to university i was not able to get admission into medicine but rather biological science, hope was not totally lost because i could still pursue my heart desire. Along the line, that is after graduating i went into research and was working on malarial projects. But i was still not fulfilled so i had to persevere more and put in applications for graduate medicine, in my first round of applications no school offered admission though my grades were good. still i persevered and applied the following year which earned me an admission, i was so overjoyed and fulfilled when i finally entered med sch. always learn hard and persevere knowing that one day you will put smiles on the face of your patients.

Estelle’s Answer

I come from a family of health care providers, and I knew that the opportunities in healthcare are boundless. In medical school, I really appreciated gynecology in that it incorporated primary care, preventive medicine, and surgery. My job is exciting and challenging. I get to see adult patients of all ages and stages of life. It is a good idea to shadow physicians before medical school to get a good idea of the daily routine of each specialty that interests you.

Richard’s Answer

I chose to become a physician because I have many family members who are physicians and it looked like a field in which I find job satisfaction. However, I did not truly become passionate about the field of medicine until my third year of medical school during clinical rotations. That was the first time I saw an image guided procedure. I was fascinated by the intersection between medical imaging and treatment. I decided that I wanted to become an interventional radiologist. Now I get to perform image guided procedures every day including angiograms, TIPS, radioembolization of tumors with Y-90, and thermal ablation of tumors.
