Hi Jose -

I was like you when I graduated high school, and was interested in art, drawing, and computers. I didn't go down the animation route but ended up doing more computer technology, dabbled in web design, and now I'm a user experience designer. I think you should definitely follow your passion. I ended up focusing less on design when I went to college, realized that I wasn't happy with where my career was going, and circled back to design in the end which is what I am ultimately passionate about.

I would say there are a lot of opportunities for you if you're interested in computer animations and graphic design for you to branch into. These fields are really in demand right now and you could essentially work in any industry.

From a graphic design stand-point, one of the things that I did that really helped me was constantly creating. In high school and college, I made flyers for events, brochures for clubs, designs for websites, business cards for friends, etc. Doing a lot of this in my free time helped me realize that I was passionate about this and could turn it into my career.

Best of luck,

Hi Jose,

First of all, follow your passion. You are going to be doing this job day in and day out for hopefully, a long time given how much you like the work. It is so much easier when you get up every morning and can't wait to get to work. That said, also look at other closely related fields and see if you have some secondary things that you'd like to do. Have you started researching the jobs that use your talents? My mom was a graphic designer and she worked for a newspaper setting how the page would look (do that for a website though, not a hardcopy thing). Graphic design can also lead into website design, photography and other jobs.

It is tough to find a job especially when starting out. If you have more than one field to look in, you have a better chance of landing a job. I have two professions just so I can move around when I get bored with one and that has kept me going my whole career.

Good luck!
Gail
