In terms of the career of Sports Business Management , does that include being an agent or is it just managing teams. Would this also require me to do a course in sports law or contract law to be able to represent Athletes

Hi Floyd -
Sports Management in and of itself does not require law courses.Sports Management careers are not limited to just coaching at team or being a sports agent. A sports management career can include anything from organizing sporting events, working for a professional or college team, working at a stadium or arena or venue; working in finances or marketing or public relations or promotions or ticketing or operations or statistics, etc, etc for a team. Those types of sports management jobs do not require a law degree.

However, if you are pursuing a career as a sports agent, they you will have to have extensive knowledge of law and contracts. The specific requirements and prerequisites are better answered by a sports agent and you may try lobbing a question on this forum along the lines of "what are the prerequisites and schooling path necessary to become a sports agent".

Cooper’s Answer

Sport management overall is much broader than just managing a team or players. The business side of sports is very broad, with multiple different roles. Pursuing a degree in sport management will prepare you for all of these roles, while also helping you narrow down what you specifically want to do.
In order to be an agent, law school is very important. It isn't required, but It is worth considering as the contact law can be very beneficial for an agent. This is one of the main components of being an agent, and will set you up for success when negotiating with teams/brands on behalf of your players.
