Hi Amanda,

That's a very interesting question. It sounds like you are being very thoughtful about some options the future may hold for you. It's always great to plan ahead if you can. A really good friend of mine majored in Early Childhood development and she now has a very rewarding career as a Child Life Specialist at Cook Children's Hospital. If you have not already it would be a great idea to sit down and speak with your college counselor about career options you can pursue with this particular degree. A few electives you could explore that would be helpful on the mission field and really wherever you end up are Multicultural Perspectives, any communications class such as Nonverbal Communications or Speech or even Death and Dying.

When I worked as an academic advisor I had several students that had worked on the mission field at one time or another. If you and your boyfriend are seriously considering going to the mission field together I would suggest you research the country you are going to. While some countries are open, meaning you can obtain a visa directly related to be religious worked, while other countries are closed, meaning you can not obtain a religious visa but you can go as a humanitarian worker or perhaps an English teacher. Knowing more about the country you feel called to go to can help you make informed decisions about your electives.

Lastly I would say, and I'm sure you already know, that these are all very big decisions. School, marriage, career, and possibly leaving the country and becoming a missionary are not light decisions. I would encourage you to talk to your family and your church as you prayerfully consider these things. I definitely think you are on the right track by doing your research.
I hope this helps a little!
