  1. Make sure to register the contact information of anyone you meet. Do that to the smallest detail! I use Gmail to do that which is also connected to my phone.

  2. Be very careful talking about the project you are working on. Sometimes mentioning the specifics is NoNo, and sometimes acknowledge the existence of a project is also a NoNo! Know your limits and don't accidentally leak information.

  3. Build relationships and have small talk with EVERYONE; however, understand that you are there to work and don't go overboard with your relationship building efforts.

For whichever project you are working on, it is important to understand what benefits it brings to your organization. Try to understand the value being delivered in everything you do. Also learn processes of software development life cycle like Agile Scrum, XP, Kanban, Waterfall, Change management. See for opportunities where you can automate and reduce overhead. Learn what metrics/KPIs are captured as a part of project management.

I think as an intern, understanding the above should give you pretty good start in application development. Wish you all the best.

Nir’s Answer

Don't be afraid to ask for opportunities to be a fly on the wall and absorb. Ask senior engineers if you can sit in with them for a day and watch them work, offer to buy them a cup of coffee. If they are nice they will be very happy to help and answer all your questions. In my experience, the vast majority of people are very happy to help if you don't catch them in a particularly stressful moment.
