There are lots of colleges with great Engineering departments out there! If you know what kind of Engineering interests you the most (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, etc) you can find lists on the internet (US News and World report is one common source) that can help focus your search. But in my experience, if a college has a good overall Engineering department, all of the sub-departments will be pretty good.

Visiting a few colleges is good advice. Another important thing to consider is the process for becoming an Engineering major at a college. Some schools will require you to apply to the Engineering department after joining, and often to a specific type of Engineering. Others will allow you more time, and to take some introductory courses to find out what you like, before choosing a major. My recommendation is to look for a place that gives you the most flexibility to try different subjects before focusing on just one.

As pointed out above, most Engineering majors will have basic requirements in math & physics, so whatever experience you can get in high school with those subjects is helpful.

Any college with an engineering program!! Most employers for stem are looking for the degree not the school. Some highly ranked Engineering schools are University of Michigan, the Ohio State University, University of Washington, Colorado School of Mines, University of Colorado - Boulder, and I am biased towards this one but Oregon State University! Find a program you want to study and find options and visit!

Seeing that you live in Colorado, the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder is a great school. They rank in the top 17 in the nation among public universities and No. 31 overall, according to data released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report

The campus is very nice, not to mention that in state tuition is 1/3 the cost for students that pay out of state. This is very favorable for you. If you attended another university of same stature out of state, it will cost much more.

For the value, their rank in engineering, CU Buffs would be a great choice.

Get at least a bachelors degree in the Engineering discipline that you're interested in. Many engineering careers will also value Masters degrees.

Hi Deejay,

If you just say that you want to become an Engineer, it sounds really vague. There are a lot of fields in which you can become an Engineer at. I would advice you to first choose your Field of interest (Computer science, Mechanical Engineer ,etc). After Deciding upon your interest you can choose the best University related to that field of interest and you can proceed from there.

You should evaluate what type of engineering you want to pursue. I would review engineering universities that offer several programs to take classes in. There will be common core prerequisites in Physics and Mathematics (Calculus) for most engineering types.
