Iris,
The most rewarding part about this profession to me is hearing people who felt stuck in their lives, or parents and children who were struggling in life and school, say they feel better, are reaching their goals, are proud of themselves, and recognize their value as human beings. It is an honor to help others in this way. Sometimes it means a lot of work on self-esteem, helping someone overcome an addiction, helping parents learn to help their children, or identifying a neurological difference a person didn’t know they had. This job can also be heartbreaking at times. In graduate school, mental health counselors learn how to help without becoming overwhelmed.

Seeing any sign of progress in the persons quality of life in the positive, than it was before you met! Some measure progress in large sometimes unattainable amounts! If, for instance the person came to you at first meeting, and would not look you in the eye for many sessions, then one day they came in and maintained eye contact the entire session, that is progress and it gives you a sense of accomplishment and pride! You may not reach every one you work with but if you can reach one, you’ve jumped the moon!
