Hi Marcus,

The most important thing about being a counselor is that you can listen to whomever needs counseling. Just listen and don't let your own thoughts get in the way of what you're hearing from the client. It's all about what the client says and how the client feels about things, and your own thoughts and feelings are not nearly as important as theirs.

Why?

Because your job is to help the client come to a better understanding of themselves , who they really are, and what they really want by letting them talk to you and them feeling like they are really being heard instead of hearing your own reactions or recommendations.

"Many people want to help students succeed, and they may wonder,”What is a typical day for a school counselor?” School counselors may work with preschool, elementary and high school students in order to help them create academic plans, manage learning disabilities and work through difficult personal situations. School counselors have a lot of different duties, and every work day is a little bit different. A typical work day of a school counselor may include some, most or all of these duties.

Conduct Assessments and Evaluations
School counselors may be required to conduct assessments on individual students. Those assessments may be academic, such as placement tests for students who show gifted abilities in reading or mathematics. They may also be responsible for assessments related to a learning disability, such as dyslexia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. School counselors may conduct evaluations and identify issues that could affect a student’s academic performance, including excessive absenteeism or tardiness.

Meet With Teachers, Parents and Administrators
Another typical day for a school counselor involves meeting with teachers. A counselor and teacher may meet in order to discuss a particular student’s behavior in the classroom. School counselors may also meet with a student’s parents or guardians in order to discuss problematic behaviors, academic plans or issues such as bullying. Administrators and counselors may meet in order to discuss activities performed by the counselor for the school as a whole. For example, they may work together in order to implement an anti-bullying campaign for students in all grades.

Counsel Individual Students and Groups of Students
School counselors may spend a considerable part of each day counseling individual students. They may meet with students regarding academic problems or successes. They may check in with students in order to check learning objectives or grades. Counselors may meet with entire classes in order to educate the students as a group about issues such as substance abuse, sexual abuse or planning for college. At the high school level, counselors may meet with an individual student in order to help them with decisions on career paths, applying for vocational school or college admission or investigating other options such as military service or apprenticeships.

Serve as Mandated Reporters and Make Resource Referrals
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, school counselors are mandated reporters for law enforcement purposes. If a school counselor finds out that a student is experiencing abuse or neglect at home, they must report it to local law enforcement. If the student reports abuse from a teacher, the counselor must also report this to the authorities. If a student explain that their family does not have enough food at home, the school counselor may provide a referral for the student or their family to visit a food pantry. A student who is unable to afford school supplies or funds for school trips may be provided with additional resource referrals by the counselor.

School counselors serve an essential function in the school system. They make it easier for teachers to do their jobs, and they facilitate a healthy and productive learning environment. Knowing about what is a typical day for a school counselor makes it easier for a person to decide whether or not this is the right career path for their personal strengths and preferences."
