The life of a automobile depends on the system of the vehicle. Motor and transmission are the most important systems to take into consideration. It also important to know the auto brand warranty and maintainance, this will give and idea on how much is the product design to work properly.

I don't have much experience working on cars, but think it's great you have an idea what you like and are thinking about pursuing it. Here's what I can add: think about where the car industry is headed - electric vehicles, autonomous (self-driving) cars, etc. So keep an open mind about what skills a mechanic will need to have in the future!
