How hard is it to climb into a higher position in a bigger company/how long does it take?
I’m in the 11th grade and I like to play baseball and am very interested in pursuing something business related after school. #school #general

That is a great question! To help answer your question, climbing the ladder within a larger scale company is dependent on the environment and the company's stance on employee development and success. Usually, a trend that you will see in larger scale company's is that there is a lot of competition due to the amount of employees. I am currently working for a large scale consulting firm, and from my experience thus far, the promotion process is very intricate and there are a lot of actionable pieces that play into it. Usually you are up for promotion every two years and your metrics have to outshine other employees that are at your level (same position). With every level, the promotion process get harder and harder. But nothing is impossible, if you work hard and prove how valuable you are to the company.

The initiative you've taken in reaching out is a great first step toward success. As a Junior in High School you can jumpstart your career early. You can begin by doing your best to keep your grades as high as you can. This can ensure you getting into the school of your choosing. There are also many many scholarships available for so many different criteria, including sports scholarships (like BASEBALL) if you were looking to continue to do that through your education. A degree in business goes a long way toward climbing the corporate ladder earlier and faster.
In the interim or if you don't plan to attend secondary education, you can get a job after school at a local company with a high ceiling for growth opportunity, as previous answers have indicated as well. Or potentially supplement your education through INTERNSHIPS. These are great opportunities to get real-world exposure and help to hone the kind of business you'd like to be in.
Learn as much as you can about the companies you're applying for/currently working at. Promotions and growth do have many different considerations depending on the organization, but the best advise I can give is to let your work speak for itself. Work hard to meet or exceed your company's expectations. Networking is also vital. You can start with your neighbors, people who know you and can attest to your character. You can also use social media tools like LinkedIn to meet potential mentors and discover other opportunities.

Hi Dallas - great question that so many people want the answer to! Let's start by saying that every company will promote employees using a different process. Some have a very formal process (typically a large company) and some have no process at all (typically a smaller company). If the company has a process for their promotional candidates (sometimes called High Potential Employees) find out what it is. Don't be afraid to ask. First thing to know is that people can't read your mind; if you interested in being promoted or climbing the corporate ladder you need to make that fact known to your supervisor, and it never hurts to mention your desire to grow with the company right in your interview with the company. Second thing to know is that there has to be opportunity for promotions to be available; either the company is growing / adding positions, creating the opportunity or someone has to leave an existing position that the company is trying to back fill. So the timing has to be right. You could be the best employee in the company, but if there is no opportunity (or available openings) at the time, you are going to have to be patient and wait. The 3rd piece of advice is that you should find a mentor, or someone within the company that has influence and is interested in your career. This could be your supervisor, but it could be another manager in the company who you have connected with that has taken an interest in you. Network, network, network, within your company. Get to know people, join clubs or organizations, ask for special assignments. All of these networking opportunities will gain you exposure with the company leadership, and that is what you need to have people notice you and say 'he/she would be great in the next level in this company'. So in summary, do a great job at what you were hired to do so you stand out, make your promotional desires known, find a mentor or someone that believes in you in the company, and then be patient because the timing has to be right.
