Hi there,

At a university in the United States, the initial step would be to gain admittance into a university or college offering the mechanical engineering major. Assuming you accept an offer of admission and begin taking classes, different schools have different GPA requirements in order to stay enrolled in a specific school. For example, my university required students to earn a 3.00 GPA by the end of their 3rd semester to be officially be accepted into the Mechanical Engineering major.

At the end of the day, check the university's specific admission requirements your are interested in attending for both admittance into the university, and admittance into your desired major. Hope this helps.

Guinevere Tiara’s Answer

Hello,

The first step is to select a college you would like to attend and look into the requirements that they have, starting with acceptance into the Engineering department itself. While cutoff marks will vary between universities or colleges, knowing the general range would be informative. For my particular university and its neighboring universities, it requires you to maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA while in the Engineering department, and this will rise higher to 3.0 (currently shifting) once you get into the Upper Level Division. While this may be intimidating as classes get harder, it is best to try your hardest and see if the major is a good fit for you and your likes.

Best of luck.
