Alexandra’s Answer

I agree with RJ. Follow you passion, work hard, experiment, build a good portfolio of work, practice techniques (especially the ones you find most challenging, you never know when you are going to need them) and self educate. Makeup schools will give you the basic techniques, especially if you are looking into specialized areas like body painting, prosthetics or special effects makeup but on most jobs you won't necessarily have access to the latest state of the art materials so you have to be scrappy and creative and blend your own shades or blend products/materials to achieve a custom finish. Shadow others and be open to all the different possibilities. I think your legal background will always be helpful as it will help with critical thinking, problem solving and risk analysis if you ever choose to open you own business. I hope this helps, good luck with whatever path you choose.

Tracey’s Answer

I have a unique career path of going from a licensed stylist/nail technician/makeup artist for the first 15 years of my career, to someone in the corporate world (sales operations) for the past 20 years. I went to a Vocational High School for Cosmetology, so the cost was minimal to get licensed. After leaving the "salon world" I did not completely remove myself from the beauty industry though and will always keep my state board license updated. I still am a freelance makeup artist and truly love helping to bring people's inner beauty out.
I have been working outside of the beauty industry for 20 years and worked very hard to get to where I am today. I was hired without a college degree but was lucky to have access to a corporate program that made it incredibly easy to go to college and get my bachelor's degree in business management.
Following your passion is so important, whether it takes you to law school or beauty school...or both?

RJ’s Answer

In my experience as an artist and stylist, also creative directing I would suggest following your passion and let the money follow. Self educate and if possible enroll as an accredited school. I would ask myself, would I enjoy being a lawyer or enjoy doing makeup FOR lawyers. Do what your heart tells you and do the work to be the best. Shadow others.
Thank you comment icon Good Morning Mr. Rj Miller i appreciate the compliment and i have learned something very new. Jozlyn Johnson
