James Constantine’s Answer

Dear Tiffanie,

Does your level of happiness influence your level of success?

The intricate link between happiness and success has been a subject of extensive discussion among psychologists, researchers, and philosophers. Although there's no definitive proof that happiness directly influences success, numerous studies and theories shed light on their connection.

Exploring Happiness and Success:

Subjective Well-Being: This concept refers to how an individual perceives their own life, including their level of satisfaction and their experiences of happiness or positive emotions. Evidence suggests that those with higher subjective well-being often enjoy better health, stronger social bonds, and increased productivity in many life areas.

Markers of Success: Success can be gauged in various ways, like career progress, financial security, personal development, and goal attainment. While some people define success by external achievements like wealth or prestige, others focus on internal elements like personal growth, self-satisfaction, and meaningful relationships.

Happiness versus Success: The link between happiness and success isn't always clear-cut. Some people find joy in achieving their objectives and gaining external success, while others value inner peace, satisfaction, and emotional health above conventional success measures. It's possible for someone to excel in their career but feel unhappy due to stress, burnout, or an imbalanced work-life ratio.

Psychological Views: Positive psychology underscores the significance of well-being, resilience, and positive emotions in promoting success and achievement. From this viewpoint, fostering a positive mindset, expressing gratitude, nurturing strong social ties, and pursuing meaningful objectives can boost both happiness and success.

Individual Variations: Each person's interpretation of happiness and success is subjective, shaped by their values, beliefs, cultural background, and life experiences. Some people may find joy in simple pleasures and a balanced work-life ratio, while others may value ambition, competition, and external recognition as success indicators.

In Summary:

In essence, the link between happiness and success is complex and differs from one person to another. While some people may find that achieving external success enhances their happiness, others may value internal well-being and satisfaction as signs of a successful life. In the end, true success might involve a balance of external accomplishments and internal satisfaction that aligns with one's values and goals.

Top 3 Credible Sources Used in Answering this Question:

American Psychological Association (APA): The APA offers research-based insights into the link between happiness and success from a psychological viewpoint.

Harvard Business Review (HBR): HBR provides articles and studies on the overlap of happiness and success in the realm of professional achievement.

Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania: The Positive Psychology Center investigates well-being, resilience, and positive emotions as they relate to personal growth and success.

Stay blessed!

Evi’s Answer

Hello,

According to me you need to define in what area you are linking happiness and succes. Happiness and success can happen in your personal live, your family, your friends, your job, your study, ....
It does not necessarely mean if f.e. you are not succefull in your job that you cannot be happy with your family or friends. On the other hand it might also be that you are very succesfull in your job but you need to work long days for it, or have to please people you don't like, .... in that case I can imagine it wont make you happy afterall.
So I might think that being happy is not necessarily a result of being succefull nor the other way around.

I do wish you a lot of Succes and especially a lot of Happiness!!

Kind Regards

No.

Happiness comes from doing things that make you feel fulfilled in life. Sometimes, you may have a job that makes you a lot of money, but you hate it. Even though you're successful, you won't be happy.

If your job makes you feel fulfilled in life, then yes, happiness and success would come hand-in-hand.

Gurnoor’s Answer

Happiness and success don't always go hand in hand. It's entirely possible to be happy without being successful. However, sometimes, being successful can make it easier to find happiness, as it often gives us access to things that can bring joy into our lives.

Kimmie’s Answer

While nothing can take away from hard work, school and determination...if you are genuinely an optimistic person, that can take you over the top. When you are happy with who you are, what you accomplish and how you share that in your everyday life...it is what can push you ahead of others. Happiness can be contagious, but it has to be sincere. People can tell if you are forcing it or just going through the motions to "appear" happy. When you share your positivity with others, it can absolutely inspire them to want that too! If you can find a career that captures your passion, your happiness could continue to grow! If you are working in a field that is stressful, be sure you are finding ways to cultivate your happiness during your time off.

Doug’s Answer

In a word, no, happiness is not necessarily related to success - if by "success" you mean career success. There are plenty of wealthy and powerful people who are also miserable, and vice versa. In my travels around the world, some of the happiest people I've encountered tend to live in simple conditions, with strong community and family connections. Speaking from my own experience, I was raised with the idea that more money equals more happiness, which I have found to be untrue in practice.
My advice - do what makes you happy and success will come. As opposed to doing what others say you're "supposed" to do and hoping that will make you happy at some point in the future. Having said that, don't limit yourself! It's entirely possible to love what you do for a living, and also make good money and be successful in your career. Be mindful and true to yourself, thinking about what makes you happiest in terms of career, family, living situation, income level, friendships, etc. Everyone measures "success" differently, so do what is right for you.
As a side note, you may also want to look into the country of Denmark, which is consistently ranked as one of the "happiest places to live." I have visited there and can say that it seems to be true! Despite not being the wealthiest, biggest (or warmest) country in the world, they found a way to make most people happy. Check it out and good luck!

Hi Tiffanie,

Success is not only about 'career success' or mapped to particular achievement. You can consider yourself happy or successful multiple times in your life like making your parents happy or helping someone in need.

Being said that, being successful in your career definitely makes you financially independent and confident sometime enough to overcome some of the fears and sadness of your life. Personally, it has helped me. So, we should always keep working towards the dreams in our life.

All the best. :-)

Thanks,
Surabhi

Vishal’s Answer

Its not always a good idea to link happiness with success, there will always be some failures in our life but it doesn't mean that we should be unhappy until we succeed. Unhappiness comes from the feeling of "lack of something", if we focus on what we don't have we will always have something to be unhappy about. The key is to appreciate what we have and at the same time enjoy the journey of achieving what we would like to have.
