Is it better to attend a smaller or larger university?

I am interested in pursuing astrophysics and computer science. The colleges I'm looking at with appealing programs in those fields range from CalTech to Penn State. If it does come down to a decision, what is your opinion on larger vs. smaller institutions? The former tends to have better facilities/connections while the latter is likely to provide more of an individualized focus. It of course depends on many other factors, but I'm interested in the pros/cons of this aspect in particular. #computer-science #physics #astronomy #astrophysics

Most of the small colleges do not have the research facilities of large universities . Choice of selection depends upon what we are looking for.
The big college provides facilities like well- updated libraries, well-funded sports academics, famous faulty which you may not find in the small colleges sometimes is my optinion

Thomas’s Answer

Lots of students prefer larger universities with a diverse, vibrant student body, lots of classes and majors and lots of resources. Others might prefer a smaller university that is more intimate, more time with professors, and a slower pace. Many choose private schools that may come with some benefits of both: lots of resources per student but with a smaller class size.

Since you're pursuing a technical field, I would recommend finding departments and research labs that fit your focus and investigate whether they allow undergrads to do hands-on research. No matter what school you go to, there will be a lot of competition for these types of positions, but they are really valuable for helping you get into grad school and/or discover where your interests really lie.

Very much depends on what your post graduation goals are. If you want to stay in research then, it is likely a larger research based university is the way to go. If you wan to get a job outside of academia, then I don't believe it matters as much.
