Hello! I wouldn't say that there is something specifically that you need to study in order to be an engineer but rather you need to be motivated and able/willing to problem solve. In my experience the concepts within engineering aren't to complex as long as you don't try to overthink them. I would say that the lower division classes are more important than your upper division because in the lower division you are making the building blocks to solve some of the more complex problems in upper division. Algebra is a huge component of engineering because while it may be easy in its definition slipping a negative or performing an invalid division can cause some major problems and what was once a simple problem can quickly become a nightmare thats unsolvable.
In terms of problem solving a person needs to be able to thing outside the box and understand that in a lot of cases there isn't 1 specific way to solve a problem. In engineering there are 100 ways to solve a problem so understanding this and finding the way that helps you learn the information the best is the vital in engineering. Also with problem solving, being able to go out on your own and do research and ask the right question will go a long way into solving many of your problems. In todays society there are so many helpful resources but its going to take more than a simple google search to find your answer. I constantly find myself on YouTube, reddit, Wikipedia, etc trying to see if someone has also had the same question and see what approach they took to solve the problem.
Overall Engineering is a great career field and super fun. Just work and trust the process and you will get what you wish. Good Luck!

An enjoyable way to see applied engineering/problem solving is to read "The Martian" by A. Weir!...or just watch Matt Damon do it on Mars in the movie....

I have found one of the most important skills for an engineer is communication and teamwork. Technical background is important, but potentially even more important is learning to effectively communicate. This includes verbal communication, written communication, large group presentations and understanding your audience. Communication is often about telling a story and getting the audience to become engaged in that story.
