Alejandra’s Answer

Hi Kaiden,

This is a great question! There are a few things to keep in mind in the marketing salary world, but most importantly marketing is a great way to make money and there is a lot of opportunity for growth, which in my opinion is the most important when deciding on a career. Marketing salary varies on where you live and which part of marketing your working in so here are a few tips on making the most money in marketing.

1) Location- You'll make more money in marketing (and lots of careers) if you live in a city with a higher living wage. I recommend looking for these sorts of jobs in high-paying locations (like NYC) because it will increase your personal standard of how much you feel you deserve to get paid. This will give you a higher launching pad when searching for other jobs and ensure you're getting paid what you deserve no matter the market as you move around to different cities (if you don't fall in love with NYC)

2) Job Type- The more niche your marketing job is the better money you can make. Think programmer or marketing scientist, these are jobs that not everyone can do and will tend to pay you more. You can also work to become an expert in a niche field, for example, I work in cultural and influencer marketing. Although this job doesn't require a special skill set, my knowledge allows me to be more valuable within the marketing field.

3) Internships- This is the best way to get a better job to start out and will also make you seem more informed when people review your resume. I wish I had done more internships because a) it makes getting a job easier b) you can learn about what jobs you do and don't like.

Hope that helped and let me know if you need any more info!!

Thank you comment icon Hi Caryn - maybe you could give a range of salaries or what the average marketing professional makes? Just as an estimate to answer the student’s question. Thanks for this answer! Alexandra Carpenter, Admin
