I am not into the sports however, I maybe can tell you that you must start with a P.E , Health, Eating healthy, coaching small teams for starters, if you are looking at being a head coach as a career goal? I did not quite understand the question of career choices? What type of coach or sports person are you speakiing about? Football or basketball, hockey, baseball? So many and various pay on various levels. Also individual coaches, for special teams, defense, offense.

This opportunity helps you to demonstrate your leadership attributes. You also can use that as a reference how you are a great manager and lead your team to succeed. In an event if you are looking for other sports management, it gives you a better chance competing with other candidates.
