Shahbaz’s Answer

If you go through a college / conventional study route, it would take 4 to 6 years based on the domestic educational structure. However, IT / software engineering is something which you can start using with a minimum of 1 year of investment in the right tools if you have the right mindset / focus. The field is quite vast so you need to ensure the following:
- you should have clarity on what you would like to do exactly e.g. software, development, quality, ERP etc.
- your approach to be flexible in learning new skills as there are developments in IT field every minute.

Leroy’s Answer

In North American, it typically takes 4yrs to get any engineering degree. I have a Mechanical Engineering degree from Canada.

Having spent some time learning how to code, and working with students in high school or university, you can get a head start by learning how to program today, so you understand the basic languages, and if really something you like and want to pursue as a career. I would recommend Javascript, CSS and HTML, that's the basic and still most popular, then can expand into Python where is more focused on backed AI and data science. There are a lot of online courses, that's how I learned the basics.

Mickael’s Answer

Hi Anushree,

Depending on your country it varies but that would be, in general, between 4 and 6 even 7 years. In France, you get the Master of Science in 5 years. In United States, your Master of Science is about 6 years.
If you are targeting lower degree, it would be usually 3 - 4 years.

Ed’s Answer

Honestly none, but good luck maintaining the focus to learn everything. Also college provides the general perspective a 4 year degree gives you ( for example: psychology, statistics)

Finally a structured curriculum provides opportunity to understand computer topics that you might never use directly but need to know (database, security).

That’s to start you off. And 80% of the folks who want the same job as you have already done this.

Want to get ahead of the pack? Then get a graduate degree.
Thank you comment icon Hey Ed, this is insightful information and I understand what you are trying to communicate but the tone around this answer can be interpreted as a bit discouraging. Would you be willing to edit it to have a more encouraging tone? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Sushant’s Answer

In General, the Bachelor degree in Technology (or Equivalent) is a 4 year university degree in Computer Science. A masters degree will be another couple of years. Please note that there are clear bifurcation of engineering stream in Software/ Hardware. Software computer engineer has much more demand in the Job Market than a hardware computer engineer, who are more in demand in the field of computer related research such as Processor or Chipset technology. The real fun in Software engineering is learning various languages such as JAVA and Python and involving yourself in the upcoming buzz of Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning - and there is no age of learning these.
