Hi Beth!
Psychiatrists must complete medical school and an additional four years of residency training in psychiatry. Psychiatrists spend much longer in school than most other mental health professionals.
You'll need to do the following to get your license:
- Graduate college.
- Take the MCAT
- Apply and be accepted to medical school.
- Graduate medical school.
- Apply to be a licensed doctor.
- Complete a psychiatric residency.
- Become board-certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. (Board certification is optional, but most psychiatrists want to be certified.)
- Complete any additional state licensing requirements.
It looks like more information on how to become a Psychiatrist can be found here: https://www.goodtherapy.org/for-professionals/personal-development/become-a-therapist/article/psychiatry-101-how-to-become-psychiatrist#:~:text=Psychiatrists%20must%20complete%20medical%20school,them%20to%20prescribe%20psychotropic%20medication.
Best of luck!

To work in the field of Psychology, you will need at least an undergraduate degree in the field, as well as volunteering (or hopefully paid experience). If you have am undergraduate degree and are looking for hands-on training or experience, leverage your contacts and try to find places where you can get your "foot in the door".
Do some research, learn the basics and be sure it's of interest to you
Talk with those in the field to hear their story (chances are they would love to tell you about their journey)
Consider looking into higher education programs already, such as masters and PsyD
Network with those in the field
Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer (or get paid experience or internships) as this shows you have hands-on experience which is critical
Katelyn recommends the following next steps:
