Florida State University
There are many great schools where you can study computer programming and software engineering online. One of those schools is Florida State University (FSU), located in Tallahassee, Florida. U.S. News & World Report ranked FSU 43rd among top public schools in the nation in 2016. Students who already hold an associate's degree can earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) or a Bachelor Arts (BA) in Software Engineering in a distance learning, part-time format. The programs cover programming languages, such as C, Java, and HTML, as well as topics in hardware and computer science theory. Each accepted applicant is assigned a mentor who helps facilitate the student's successful completion of the program.

North Carolina State University
Another great school for those wishing to study computer programming and software engineering is North Carolina State University (NCSU) located in Raleigh, North Carolina. NCSU was named the 37th best public college in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2016. The Department of Computer Science and the engineering online program jointly operate a certificate program in computer programming. Applicants are required to already hold a bachelor's degree, and they must complete an introduction course to C++ programming as a prerequisite. The program focuses on Java programming, but also offers courses in data structures, Web development and game design.

There are many schools that are appropriate for computer programming. They include:

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA
Stanford University in Stanford, CA
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA
As well as:

University of California - Berkeley
University of Texas at Austin
Princeton University

Joanne’s Answer

Hemraj has listed some great resources.

Keep in mind that programming changes .. one year c++ is the hot language, the next year java is hot.

Develop good, sound programming practices first, then let the language follow.

Brian’s Answer

As a hiring manager, after you get your first job out of college, I look at work experience *much* more than the school you attended. As you are evaluating universities, I would lean towards those that have good internship programs for their students. Being in a top-tier university can help you with that initial job, but on-the-job experience will matter much more than which university you attend.
