Matthew’s Answer

The answer to this question is usually focus. My teacher once told me to ask myself this question when I became distracted or felt that I was not achieving my goal fast enough.

The question is: "Of all of the things I could do, what are the few things that I must do that will really make a difference?"

Matthew recommends the following next steps:

Write your goal down somewhere you can see it.
Plan each day to do something specific to move towards your goal.
Review at night to see if you did what you planned to do in the morning.
Repeat until you have moved closer to your goal.
Increase the goal....and make it fun

Jake’s Answer

I would echo what the people before me have said and would like to add it's important in how you set your goals. I was taught to set SMART goals:
S: specific so you narrow it down for effective planning.
M: measurable so you can see the progress you're making towards the goal.
A: attainable so you achieve your goal in a realistic timeframe and not get discouraged if you're not getting closer to the goal.
R: relevant so you have a goal set that aligns with your long-term objectives.
T: Time-based so it allows for prioritization and motivation.

E.g. objective of writing a book.
Weak goal: I am going to write a book.
SMART goal: I'm going to write a 60,000-word book in 6 months, finishing it on October 31 by writing 2,000 words a day.

Tammy’s Answer

If you can describe your goal you can achieve it!

Keys to successful goal setting are:

1. Write it down.
2. Organize by time.
3. Keep your goal handy.
4. Be specific.
5. Agreed by all
6. Be flexible

Think big. Dream big. Start by writing down everything that you want. Doing this over a day or two the first time let's your mind enjoy the process. Then you can put a date in your calendar once a year for a refresh. Life sometimes gets in the way and our goals and priorities change, so it is important to review your goals regularly.

Once you have this list then put it into time frames - short term (1 to 2 years), medium term (5 years) and long term (10 and more years). Don't be surprised if you have 20 short term goals, 10 medium term goals and only 1 or 2 long term goals. It takes practice to think big and to think long term. Realistically your brain can only address 10 goals so break the short term goals into year 1 and year 2.

Now attach a dollar amount to your goals. Estimates are acceptable.

The fun part is to flesh out your goal. If you want to go on a vacation, is it Iceland or the Caribbean? If you want a pet, is it a goldfish or a dog? What is the colour, size, location, complexity, etc.? Describe your goal in as much detail as you can to make it more real and more motivating.

Now put a picture in your wallet so that every time you go to spend money you can choose to spend now or save for the bigger goal. And/or, put a picture where you will see it every day.

Discussing your goal with others helps you to be accountable. Others can help you achieve your goal. Also, some goals need other people in your life to agree with the goal because it affects them too.

Regularly reviewing your goals to see if they fit into your current life ensures that you are in charge of the goals not the other way around. Be flexible like a backbone, not unmoving like a brick wall.

Start now!

Tammy recommends the following next steps:

Write it down make it happen.
Put an appointment in your calendar to do each step identified as keys to successful goal planning.
Talk to others about your goals and theirs.
