Brooklyn’s Answer

Hi there Melanie! Congratulations on recently earning an Associates Degree. Pursuing Graphic Design is a fun yet challenging career path - I would first clearly define what Graphic Design path you're wanting to work towards. Contracted? Corporate? Marketing & advertising? Art and illustration? User interface graphic design? Once you have clearly defined this, then I would find people on Linkedin who are doing what you desire to be doing. Look at their attached portfolios and their "Licenses & certifications" section. After, I would consider seeking out ways to obtain the certifications they have listed and adding those to your own resume/Linkedin. Great options for certifications are Coursera and Udemy. Along with that, building a portfolio is very important. Find those who have inspired you, then build your portfolio based on that inspiration. Lastly, reach out to those on Linkedin and ask to connect/ask for advice. So many professionals are open to giving advice and sharing their stories!

Cedric’s Answer

Hi Melanie. During my years working with talent and corporations looking for graphic design talent. Putting together a portfolio to showcase your work is crucial to getting your foot in the door. Connect with a recruitment agency that can give you some suggestions on what today's creative departments are looking for to allow you to build your profile and portfolio. Reach out to a few companies that specialize in this area of expertise. Aquent, Creative Circle.

Sarah’s Answer

Hi Melanie,

There are a lot of jobs to be had in animation and motion graphics– those are great skills to have. In order to expand to more general graphic design (like print publications, advertising or packaging) I suggest learning how to use basic design software like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign from Adobe Creative Cloud. A Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and a portfolio is the typical requirement. If you're unsure of 'what' you want to design for, an internship at a marketing/design agency can help you build a varied portfolio. Marketing/Ad agencies offer a wide variety of work and can give you exposure to many different channels, animation/motion included.

Best of luck!

Sarah recommends the following next steps:

Learn Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
Search for internships at design or marketing agencies.
Build a portfolio of work and a history of experience/exposure to different channels.
