Hi Daniel, as someone who works with graphic designers, developing packaging, would be important to familiarize yourself with Adobe Illustrator and suite of products, as that's the industry standard software. See if there are competitions you can enter, see how you stack up, and understand what others are design and market trends.

I would begin by creating examples of what you want to achieve, and then getting help from the school you are in to market your work.
I would also find someone who is successful in this field and ask to mentor with them for a month or a summer. This will give you exactly what to expect, and then you can make a list of what you need to do in order to achieve your final goal. It may include taking certain courses, and above all excelling. Recommendations will come to then assist you to achieve your final goals.

Stephanie’s Answer

Hello,

I am an electrical engineer but, as a hobby, I do 2D illustrations for various games and started recently doing 3D animation a little bit wich is why I will give some advice on this topic.

I would advise you to think about what sectors you would like to explore. Is it 2D? Is it 3D? And for the sectors you are interested in, you should look up the various softwares that are commonly/widely used (Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, PaintToolSai, ClipStudioPaint, Sketchup, etc...) and try to get familiar with those in their usage. Do you know artists whose works are inspiring to you, or perhaps techniques in the industry you would like to learn? That's is also something that could be interesting for you to explore.
When you know a little bit what direction you want to take, constantly practice to become very good with your software, learn techniques, look up for tutorials and explore various things; the only limit here is your imagination :)

I wish you a good success!
