Valuing yourself. On many levels
Valuing yourself in terms of pay. Architects as a profession are pricing themselves into the ground trying to win bids on projects. But on a personal level, a lot of younger people are afraid to ask for what they are worth or fight for what they are worth. A lot of the people I worked with always seemed to have trouble asking for the pay they thought they were worth
Valuing yourself in terms of time. Work life balance is something you need to make sure you achieve. Like any profession with deadlines, crunch, long hours and weekends can be an occasional requirement and you cant expect that they wont. However, when a firm is driving you on repeated projects for 60+ hours on a recurring basis, you need to be able to stand up and say it isnt ok or it will consume you. Ive seen several people burn out because they wouldnt speak up for work life balance
I would say those have been the hardest things for me
