Jessica’s Answer

Hi Yamilca,

It is so great that you found something you are passionate about!

The first step to becoming a civil engineer is to study civil engineering or a similar major in college. After you take some classes for this area of study, it is great to get real-world experience in civil engineering. This can be done by working with a professor at your school, getting an internship, or job shadowing someone in the field.

With this educational background and work experience, I am confident that you will land a full-time job in civil engineering upon graduation.

Best of luck!

Brayden’s Answer

Hello!

There are a couple of ways in order to become a civil engineer but civil engineering is one that almost requires you to attend a 4 year university that offers the degree. The challenge with being a civil engineer is that typically you will need to get your PE license in order to be able to sign off on drawings and put forth build ideas. The PE exam consists of a multiple tests that eventually tests you on everything that you would of learned while attending school. The questions can range from basic algebra learned freshman year to extensive structural integrity questions you would of seen senior year. To even sit for the PE exam you have to work under a PE for 2 years so its something that takes some time. In the end being a civil engineer is super cool because you get to design building and structures which is a pretty cool job.

Hopefully that helps! Good luck!

Vern’s Answer

The is a list of the basic steps

1) study as much math, chemistry, biology, physics , and ethics in high school as you can. Yes, ethics is important because to be effective an engineer needs to be trusted.

2) Go to a college that has a curriculum in Civil Engineering to obtain a bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or closely related field such as structural engineering,, geotechnical engineering, or environmental engineering, If possible consider continuing in college to obtain a masters of science in civil engineering. consider taking a summer to do an internship in an engineering office, construction company, or government agency (e.g. Army Corps of Engineers) that does large civil works projects

3) When qualified, take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, (also known as the Engineer in Training ( EIT ) exam) from you state board of Professional Registration. The first attempt is normally in the last year of college. I will assume you pass on the first try but many people need several attempts.

4) About 6 months before you graduate with your civil engineering degree apply for whatever jobs look interesting. For you first job look for an organization that does interesting work more than a big paycheck. Common employers include: county public works departments, city governments, state highway departments, and Federal agencies (Army Corps of Engineers, NAVFAC, Bureau of Reclamation, and Federal Transportation Administration). and consulting engineering firms. Civil engineering jobs exist everywhere.

5) After working under a licensed Civil Engineer for about 2 years you my apply to sit for the Professional (Civil) Engineering Exam.
After you pass the Professional Engineering Exam you are qualified to use the title "Civil Engineer" and more importantly you can sign and stamp engineering reports, drawings, and other documents. Again, I will assume you pass on your first attempt but many people need several attempts.

This sounds like a long and difficult path but you need to remember Civil Engineers hold positions of great responsibility. Their actions effect the health and safety of every person every day.

Luciano’s Answer

You like to draw, design, build things and see the result of your work, in a real and concrete way.
If your answer was yes, at least to part of that question, then you already think like a civil engineer.
Find out more about the subject, about well-known engineers in your country, about important works and the professionals who made them.
I believe that this way I can have more inspiration on the subject.
