Leroy’s Answer
Hi Henry, in both cases, you would need to have a portfolio of drawings, in this day and age, I would think hand drawings/sketches as well in digital. For architecture, I believe the industry standard software is still AutoCAD by Autodesk, and for graphic designer would be Adobe suite of products, like Illustrator and Indesign. I would start drawing, creating, familiarizing these softwares, and explore what you enjoy to draw.
Good luck,

Thank you Leroy, that answer really helps, I’ve heard of AutoCAD a lot, I’ll definitely familiarize myself with that program.

Hi Henry! Great question - You'll want a Macbook Pro and/or an iPad Pro. You may also want to invest in a drawing tablet.
You'll want to purchase the Adobe Creative Cloud - your school may have the software on their computers if you take a design course.
YouTube is a great space to teach yourself how to use these tools, as well as Linkedin Learning.
For any more advice, feel free to send me a message!

Thank you Cara, I appreciate the answer, I’ll be sure to save up for these things in the future.

Hi Henry, what exciting paths you are considering. Something to keep in mind is that to become an architect you will need to understand design, and you will need an understanding of building construction. While graphic designers can illustrate buildings that defy the laws of physics, architects get to design buildings that follow the laws of physics.
As for graphic design tools the most important equipment is your creative mind. Next you will benefit from having pencil and paper to sketch out initial designs. There are some industry standard tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign which are separate software applications in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, but there are also more cost effective options as well. Sketch and Figma are popular vector graphic tools, Canva is a popular tool with a much more affordable startup cost than the Adobe CC. Computers are advanced enough that these tools can work on most any operating system. I recommend starting to create with what you have available, and look for tools that fulfill the needs you come to have as you expand your ability.

Thank you Jay, this really helps me think about how I’ll hone my skills.
