Hi Harris,
I also graduated from the university with Computer Science, and then I started my career with Software Engineer because I am interested in programming. So the first thing for you is to find your interests, for example: Sofware Engineer, DataBase Administrator, business analysis, documentation, project management etc. For each job, you could search the detailed job description on LinkedIn to understand the required knowledge and background. And you can also search for some role model in LinkedIn, to understanding their education career, job career development. So there are so many jobs, so many companies and so many industries you could choose, but you need to find out the most important two things: the first one is your interests, the second is your advantages. If you are intersted in programming, you could choose Software Engineer. If you are interested in people interactions, you could choose Project Management. I hope the above guidance can help you. Good luck and start your software development journey!
Best regards,
Dynesy Yuan

Hi Harris, from my point of view, software developers and DevOps engineers are the most profitable, and easy to find good job.
I do not recommend to close yourself in frames of one particular specialization like database or storage administrator.

Hi Harris,
There is no one best career in Computer Science. Information Technology offers a wide number of opportunities from application development, database administration, infrastructure, workplace technologies, security, data analytics, and finance. First you need to decide in which part of computer science you want to start your career. Even after you pick one to start it does not mean you need to stay in that part of computer science. Over my career I have held many roles in Information Technology from application development, leading application development teams, infrastructure support, business service management, and IT finance. Computer science offers many opportunities. Pick the one that you want to start with and know that there are many other opportunities for you to explore and try once working in computer science. Also, technology keep changing which leads to more and more opportunities. Best of luck in your the first opportunity that you choose to start your career.

Chris’s Answer

As many have said, there is a wide range of career options for a Computer Science graduate. What's best depends on a lot of factors especially if you already have a liking in some areas and if you do go with your guts. Otherwise, one suggestion is a career in the Security area. We are in the technology era and everyone uses it. One thing that affects everyone, if not already then sooner than you think, is the security aspect of technology. When security fails, it has a big and serious impact in your quality of life. There's a lot of work to do in securing technology and this career is in demand now. Looking further in the future, there's a big room for advancement in the area of AI and robotics. I see this as a new frontier with many have settled but its area is vast and up for grabs. You will need to use your open and creative mind here. The sky is the limit for Computer Science so good luck to whichever you choose.

David’s Answer

Like many others have answered, there is no best career! When I was in school, I thought similarly about wanting the best, comparing myself to others, etc. But I found this way living exhausting.

Life is a journey, and a technology career is so broad that you'll be able to find something that you really like. Starting with computer science, you can be a front end engineer, backend engineer, architect, database engineer, network engineer, security engineer, devops engineer, etc. You'll be able to also explore different company verticals, ranging from e-commerce, finance, social media, music or video streaming, smart phone, smart watch, etc. Just being a different type of engineer, architect, or even engineering manager in different industry verticals can be a fulfilling and well paying career.

From there, if you want to try something new, you'll be able to branch out to product management, project management, sales engineer, technical support, technical recruiting.

I've seen people transition out of an engineer role, transition into an engineer role from an accounting degree, etc. The best career path is for you to try something, learn some skills and about yourself on how happy you are, and adjust. The best career for you will be different from the best career for someone else. It's just something not easy to compare unless you're talking purely about money. Even so, most engineering roles get paid well with seniority.

Hope this helps!

Alex’s Answer

Hi Harris!
Like the other people here have answered, all careers in Computer Science are super interesting and will always have some new challenge to face. I have specialized in computer networking, and I can say it was a career I was not fully aware of when I was still studying. In networking there are bits of logistics involved because most of the time you have to look at a computer network as a whole system, and see how the parts interact with each other. Imagine studying highways, but with information packets instead of cars and buses. It is a crucial component of any application or software out there, and even cloud infrastructure. And with the incursion of AI and Machine Learning, networks will be able to become smarter and self-healing. If this interests you, spend some time in YouTube looking into these topics, and I'm pretty sure some stuff out there will blow your mind.

Best of luck!
Alex

Rebecca’s Answer

I would not view the careers in Information Technology / computer science what is better and what is not so good. There are a wide variety of in Computer Science, e.g. Developers, System Administrator, Database Administrator, System Support, Application Support, etc. Each of these can further refine into sub categories.
Firstly, the question is what is your interest? What do you want to do? Do you like coding, interact with people, doing some engineering work, etc.? You can explore online what are the careers and the job details. You can also speak your professors/ lecturer in the college. They can give you some guidance and advice too.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Uma’s Answer

The best career is going to be the one that you enjoy the most. You will want to think about software and technology from the user's perspective and figure out what excites you.
There are many opportunities outside of traditional software development as well including DevOps, Network Security, as well as Technical Support roles. No matter what you initially land on, you will always have the flexibility to pivot into a different role as you go through your career and hone in on your passion.

Brayden’s Answer

Hello!

As many of the above responses suggest there is no one perfect career choice for your given degree. It will take time for you to figure out your niche in your specific industry and if it takes a new different jobs to figure that out, that is ok. Very rarely do people stay at the same job their entire careers because as you get other you learn more about yourself and what makes you happy. One thing I am always thinking about is when I wake up everyday does my job make me want to come to work, and what are the reasons for that. Hopefully its not just because you make a lot of money or have a nice office etc, and its more about the problems that you are solving and the people you are helping. In the end you want to find a job that makes you happy because life is to short to spend your days working/doing something you hate.

Hopefully that helps!
