Robert’s Answer

I would say cash flow and the balance of winning / starting the next job. Meaning the urge is always there to start the next job , however you start to become stretched too thin. In theory, if you do great work, your reputation will carry you far as far as winning new clients etc. ONce you get there with your reputation, you can reach a point where you can charge a premium, and stay on one job until completion, then take on the next one . People will wait for quality work !

If you have a crew working for you , keeping your high quality of expectations will be an obstacle as well.

Scott’s Answer

I would say the biggest obstacle you will face is setting yourself apart from the competition. This field is saturated with great carpenters but very poor ones as well. Becoming great at carpentry would be the first step and that can be done by working for someone who has the expertise and the patience to teach all the skills. If you get this opportunity take full advantage of it and learn as much as you can. Eventually you will go on your own where the real obstacle happens. Separating yourself from the competition will be challenging so here are some tips:

Get Licensed and insured
Create a portfolio of your work
Create a presentation for your potential clients
Dress as a professional and be professional
Complete your work as you would in your own home
Always show up on time (10 minutes early)

There is so much more but these would be great first steps to over coming obstacles along the way and becoming a well renowned carpenter in your area. Best of luck to you and BE GREAT!!!
