What jobs are available for someone interested in motion graphics?

I am currently a graphic design student and have found a love for typography, vector based illustrations and infographics. I have experimented with AfterEffects and creating simple motion graphics and was wondering what type of jobs are available for such interests. #design #graphic-design #illustration #motion-graphics

Craig’s Answer

Congratulations on identifying something you enjoy. That's wonderful.

There are lots of design agencies that need people with your skill set. Some job titles that come to mind:
UX Designer
UX / Motion Designer
Visual Designer
Graphic Designer
Experience Designer
Illustration & Motion Designer

In practice, most of those above are interchangeable. Different people and different companies call them by different titles, depending on what's in vogue and some variation in what they're looking for.

The key to getting noticed is your portfolio. Design your portfolio. Then iterate and improve it. Get feedback. Iterate it some more. Have fun with it. Use it as an opportunity to be creative.

Most motion graphic artists work in the motion picture and video industries. Many also work in advertising agencies, TV stations, and for scientific and technical service agencies. Some designers join production teams for video and computer gaming. Web development companies and computer software firms may hire designers to work on non-entertainment projects.

Artists and animators work from home or in an office environment during normal working hours. Many jobs will start out with designers working independently, but will often require the input of a team at later stages of development. Designers may meet with clients or with managers and supervisors to discuss budgets, timelines, and a project’s goals. There may be times when a deadline looms that a designer or team of designers is expected to work overtime to meet a client’s timeline.

Hi Pam, in addition to the jobs Craig listed, you should also think about whether you'd like to work for an in-house team or a creative agency. Both can be enjoyable, but your personality will best determine which would be best for you. For example, I'm an in-house graphic designer and that works best for me because I'm pretty introverted and prefer working with the same clients over and over. If you are more of an extrovert you might prefer working for an agency where you would have a rotating list of clients. Hope that helps.

Klariza Leby’s Answer

If you're just starting out with motion graphics and want to get really good, consider applying for a job as a digital marketing specialist who focuses on video editing. It would be even better if you apply to work at an outsourcing company, as that way you can work with lots of different types of businesses and learn a whole bunch. By the way, that's pretty much how I got into motion graphics – started with social media graphics, then realized videos are where the action is. Give it a go – you might really dig it, just like I do!
