Hi there Ayleen,
I am a counselor so my field is slightly different, but I know for me the more skills I learned in school, the better I can really pay attention to my client so my own emotions are focused on them rather than me. I do have to stay aware of what I am feeling, because it is a tool in the session. That being said, many counselors seek their own counseling to help support their daily lives, and do a lot of self-care. If my emotions are just too much for me that day, I may reschedule an appointment as needed. I hope this helps and I hope you get a reply from a social worker to compare it against!

A social worker's job is to advocate and assist clients to grow, adapt, and to identify when they are stuck. So, the social worker must realize when their emotions are interfering with their relationship with that of the client.

As a Clinical social worker, it is also very important to practice and serve in a specialty area that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment of the clients that comes before them for care. Yes, a social worker must develop critical thinking skills in order to not get lost in their client’s emotional experiences.

Hi Ayleen:

It can sometimes be difficult to put aside ones personal feelings, especially when you are working with an individual that is experiencing a great amount of adversity. I worked in law enforcement, education and other fields where I counseled individuals who were experiencing a wide range of challenges.

One thing I was always taught to do, came from the legendary teacher and coach at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), John Wooden. Coach Wooden was a master of motivation and preparing individuals not only for athletics, but also for life. One thing he emphasized was to not do anything when you are experiencing strong emotions. He stated that when you are personally involved or are in a high state of emotion, you will most likely make a serious mistake, which could lead to serious consequences later on.

I agree with the other advisors that it is best to focus on the positive elements. It can help diffuse a situation, especially when an individual is experiencing adversity. Adversity will usually make individuals focus on what they do not have in life, rather than what they currently have. They may be attempting to change something that they cannot control, rather than focus on the things in life that they can control. You can help by emphasizing what they can achieve with the current resources they possess, and follow a step by step plan. Solving issues is much like climbing a high mountain. You need to set goals and establish a progression of camps, where resources can be attained along the way. Careful planning can help alleviate a great amount of adversity, both for you and the client.
