Graphic design happens in lots of different fields: advertising, marketing, software... Being a graphic (or interface or ui) designer in the software industry will pay much, much better than other fields.
But when you say, "where", do you mean geographically? That also depends on what field within graphic design you pursue, but generally the coasts and larger cities (and Silicon Valley) will pay better.

Graphic Design is better well-paid in the corporate environment with companies who have the money to splurge on such a resource. Think Fortune 500 companies. I've always felt that advertising firms/agencies pay more "middle-of-the-road" salaries for designers (unless they're hurting for workers) and, like Alwyn said, the designer's work could end once the contract ends.

Gabriela, I thought you only need a recommendation. Going the route of being a designer in an advertising agency would give you more salary. The risk of following this step is that many agencies employ designers to fulfill projects for their clients but if those contracts are finished, your work in this face of design would end. Hopefully this answer helps you and helps you make a decision to be a graphic designer, Good luck and success.
