Umesh’s Answer

Yes that is one way to get into robotics. However, in order to design and build a robot, you need mechanical and electrical engineers.
It just depends on what part of robotics excites you the most.

Matt’s Answer

Robotics is interdisciplinary, which means it usually involves a team of people working together with different talents, focusing on different aspects of the problem.

Your best bet is to figure out which aspect of robotics interests you most, and get good at that. Find your niche. But also, get familiar with the other aspects of the problem space, so that you can collaborate effectively.

Familiarity with machine learning and artificial intelligence will help if you're working on the executive function of an autonomous system, but perhaps less if you're soldering prototypes, or figuring out how to get accurate motion from imperfect components.

Robotics is a hard in part because it requires mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems control engineering, product design, embedded systems programming, and often a heavy dose of machine learning and computer science. Biology is often a great source of inspiration and a guide to potential solutions.

If you can become really good at one aspect, and somewhat familiar with several others, you'll be a valuable asset to a robotics team.
