Hi Cassandra:
Graphic Design is an increasingly growing field in the United States, and there are many opportunities, depending upon where you apply.
The technology age has created a situation where many companies are going online, and as a result nearly every company has at least one graphic designer on their staff. Like nearly all job categories, there are going to be better and worse geographic areas in which to obtain these positions and make a decent living.
I gathered some data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, and right now these particular cities are the best for obtaining positions in the field of graphic design. These are based upon the best hourly wages, and they are basically spread out around the United States. For the year 2022, here are the rankings.
Washington State: The companies in the Seattle region, including Amazon, Microsoft, city and local governments and universities.
Illinois: The city of Chicago, has many job openings in the area of graphic design. They have many small startup corporations and design firms working within a variety of financial and business markets.
Texas: In particular Austin. Many of my past students are relocating to the state of Texas, and it is going through a boom at the moment. Technology and design are the main emphasis, so there could be many opportunities here.
Massachusetts: The city of Boston is experiencing a need for graphic designers. Boston is full of museums and classic art. Subsequently they need graphic designers to help them display and market them to the public. It is a very creative atmosphere with lots of opportunity.
California: The city of Los Angeles and San Francisco or in need of people who have graphic design experience. This is because most of the American film and entertainment industry is located in this state.
New York: This is New York City. There could be many opportunities because New York is the center of American art and design. Plus, the town is loaded with financial and businesses from around the world.
Other top regions include:
Minnesota: In particular the city of Minneapolis
Oregon: the city of Portland has a need of graphic designers
Colorado: This is the city of Denver
So, as you can see the most opportunities are going to be located in large cities with a thriving cultural and arts community, and contain businesses in investments and finance. These are also the regions where you will find the highest salaries.
In regards to your question, the number one area for hires in the United States is Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I hope this has been helpful in providing you with a geographical map of where the opportunities are in the field of graphic design.

Hi Cassandra!
If you're interested in graphic design, I'd suggest checking out product design - also known as UX/UI design. In my experience, you can earn more in this field since you will have a tech industry salary. A lot of tech jobs are now remote, so your location may not matter as much. If Graphic Design is more up your alley right now you can also make a living with that skill set and always change into a new design career over time once you get into the industry.
Food for thought. :)

I suggest you visit the website of the Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook which is OOH.com. On the search line, type in Graphic Design. Scroll through the site until you see a discussion of salaries and regional variations in pay. I imagine that New York City would lead the country for opportunities in graphic design followed by Los Angeles, California due to the advertising and film industries.
