Psychologist or a baker?

I have been thinking on my career since I finished school, about 2 years ago. I have a degree in psychology and I am currently working as a young educator and I volunteer as a chat operator, basically providing emotional support to all of our clients.

I love to listen and to help out people, I also love cooking and baking. I love working with my hands and experimenting.

I am finding it hard to decide if I should do masters in psychology, to become a therapist or to become a baker. I would love both jobs.
I also would love to open up my own bakery someday, I am fully aware that it requires lots of work. I have no idea to decide if I want to become a therapist or having my own bakery? Or should I try to do both?

Thank you comment icon I say go for both - a psychologist career would be wonderfully balanced by the creativity of baking! Tricia Nicks

Well you need to think on your skills. Lets say psychology is what you are better at, or at least if you have a good understanding of it, do you like talking to people, do people seem to enjoy talking to you. Will finding a job that suits that criteria be fast or easy, or not.

When it comes to the baker part, you mentioned you would like to open up your own bakery. Lets say you are skilled and can do this well, you still need to worry about materials, accounting, prices, and even about how to get your bakery to be known. You would be tackling a lot of things, you would need to hire people, and since you are so busy taking care of everything like what the employees are doing, you wont be able to do what you like, which is baking.

Doing both sounds like the worse option, you need to study a lot for a career is psychology, and you need to manage a lot to open up a bakery, it would be better to work under someone, at least until you have a grasp of what you enjoy more, and what is more manageable.

Hi Nai,

First, congratulations on identifying multiple passions you want to pursue! A lot of people have difficulty getting past this step!

All of the answers you've received have great advice.

From my point of view you will have the opportunity to do both over the course of your career; you can both bake or help people through volunteering while pursuing the other professionally, you can do one earlier in your career and the other later or pursue any number of combinations.

Best of luck and continue to follow your passion!
Derek

I am a firm believer in following your heart, but this is tricky because you think you love both. I think the best plan is to figure out which one you love more and feel the most fulfilled doing.
You would need to go back to school for the masters right? What if you worked at a bakery while you attend school? Maybe you do some networking to find an opportunity where you could learn about owning a bakery while working there and getting your masters? Maybe take some business courses if you haven’t already in your years of schooling.
It’s possible that your love for baking could be hindered by the stress of the small business world and maybe it would be best to keep doing it for fun. Unless you like a challenge!
Another thought, so many individuals are getting a major jumpstart by using social media (Instagram) to advertise their products/services and starting amazing businesses just like that! Maybe you could give that a shot :)
Good luck!

Hi Nai,
I say trust yourself and see where that leads you! If you want to do both, in my opinion, it would just be a matter of what you want the timing to look like. Check out information for both and explore different options and see which excites you and can also sustain the way you want to live, both in your passion and financially! I wanted to do art and psychology and I did my masters in counseling first, and now have the opportunity to do art while working toward full licensure! Life can always look like something you do not expect! Whichever choice you make, I think you may discover enough options to explore how to get your desires met. Just keep in mind your needs may need to be met first as well and what options can meet your needs in your daily life as you work toward your dreams! Good luck!
