The best barbers Ive had are women. In most cases I find myself asking them how they started and in most cases they either go to a trade school or course. They are several weeks classes that allow you to work and go to school.

They then usually get a spot at a chain to gain experience. I have had some of the best experiences in a chain hair place. That said they usually branch out and open a location or rent a both within a reputable men's barber shop. The key they say is to have experience and build your clientele.
My jaw dropped to hear how much they can make cutting men's hair. A salon may charge $300 per person and a men's may charge $35 ( average) but once they get going they can go up in price $80. The difference is men get hair styles that require more cuts in a shorter period of time so $80 twelve times a year per person.

This is not my area of expertise AT ALL, but...

I believe that first, you have to go to cosmetology/beauty school in order to get licensed. Once you have a license, you'd have two options I see:
1) apply for a position at an established shop. If you only want to to men's hair, then look for ones that cater towards men. Hair Saloon for Men, Sports Clips, etc, are a few I can think of, but i'm sure there are more.
2) Open your own shop, and accept the clients you want.

The later gives you a lot more control over things, but it can be very hard to get the capital needed, do your own marketing, get established, etc. The former gives you a lot of that stuff, but you have less freedom in hours, clients, etc.
