Top hourly wages in the welding industry come from the piping industry. Join a pipefitters union as an apprentice and become a welder in the pipefitting industry and you're set. In Idaho the journeyman welders are making $57.00/hour in Nevada the hourly wage is $67.00/hour. There is no shortage of contractors hiring or shortage of work. There are always ups and downs in the construction trades but most hands can tuff out the slow times. Retirement,, health care, and vacation pay are all in the mix when it comes to salaries. My training in the pipefitters union and my welding skills then got me a position teaching welding at a community college for 31 years. There are times when I truly regret leaving the fitters union and my pipe-welding skills as my retirement from teaching and my salary was not nearly what it would have been had I stayed in the trades.

Working in a fabrication shop for a vessel manufacturer or large construction firm such as Bechtel or Flour would be a goal to pursue. Instead of being on the road constantly like pipeline welders you would generally work at a single location with regular hours. Working for a large firm would supply benefits for your family. There are also ship construction welders. Building construction welders. Refinery construction. It’s a great job to pursue.
You rock! This advice is very helpful.
