Hi Katherine,
What steps would you recommend I take to prepare to enter this field?
I would recommend working in the restaurant industry either front of house or back of house to get a better understanding of the logistics, work hours, etc. The best teacher is experience in my opinion. I'd also recommend talking/networking with folks in the field to gain their perspective: what do they like/not like, what education background do they have, etc.
What related fields do you think I should consider looking into?
Pastry Chef, Bakery, Coffee, Beer/Brewery
What are the most effective strategies for seeking a position in this field?
Going back to my initial sentiment, just getting a position and working from the ground floor, even if that's starting with washing dishes or hosting.
Good luck!
Jessica

I suggest looking at schools in the culinary field.
Prepare your portfolio to show the schools and build the portfolio over time.
Show your energy for the field and people will take notice and give you opportunities.

Hi Katherine
hope this email finds you well
the answers to your questions go as follow:
steps recommended to enter the culinary field - as Jessica your other active advisor here recommended goin into a hands on environment will definitely give you a taste (lol no pun intended) of what the field consists of, some do option to pursue a career and or both, I know there are some colleges out there that offer culinary classes and provide the basic techniques and perspective of what the field entitles, might want to seek that. ;-)
Fields to consider - the culinary world is soo broad that there is an immense world of options, as mentioned you could go into baking, creative art dishes, specific handling of spices based on country or even state originated dishes, so you have a lot of options, you can cater to vegan, lactose intolerant, gluten free, you name it, the range is big, the important thing here is to focus not on all but on what you are passion about, what type of foods do you love? Seafood? Poultry? Beef? Vegan? pic one and start diggin' into it some TV shows may give you ideas, tips and tricks of the trade when creating dishes and those tips may redirect you to a specific filed ;-)
Best strategy to start in the field - this one is easy! You have 2, education and hands on, both will provide you with a network, topics you can research, and a 1st row understanding of the environment and what entitles, the culinary world is awesome and always in demand everyone needs to eat right? But is not about the demand is about how good can you get in the field, remember the better you are with your customers the more customer base you will have and the more successful you will be, but it all starts with you. ;-)
Hope this helps
