Hello, people trained in automobile repair usualy go on to specialize in a certain area such as engine repair, transmission repair, engine machine, diagnostic & electronics, paint & body, chassis, and even detail.
People with mechanical skill accompanied by mechanical training will work on airplanes, helicopters, trains, busses, boats, and on anything else with gears and electronics.
My advice is, choose a career path based on your interests and goals, determine the education necessary to achieve employment in your chosen career path, last is find the schools capable of providing that education. Try to visit shops or companies where you'd like to work and ask questions.

This is a career path that has been largely neglected over the years, but in my opinion can be fostered close to home.
I was nuclear operator in the US Navy, and I owe any knowledge about being a mechanic, electrician by working around projects at home, as a young kid. If you have ever torn apart anything and fixed it and enjoy doing that kind of work, you already possess the desire to become a mechanic.
Schooling can likely be obtained from your local community college and you could get into apprenticeship through the community college. In fact, there may be programs that are funded by local businesses and OEM's if you're a good student. I know an HR director that started out as a mechanic at an auto dealership because he had the desire for more education and decided that he didn't want to pursue a engineering career-but he liked to work on his car and that was the "spark" that inspired him to pursue his career.
