Laura’s Answer

Wonderful question, Jordyn! The best way to determine how well a college fits your chosen career path is to do a bit of research on the schools you're interested in.

Each University has a department (or school) for specific majors/careers. For example, the University of Minnesota has several Colleges and Schools within the University. They have a Law School, a Science & Engineering School, a Nursing School, and more. Each school/program may also require separate admissions, and you may need to apply to the programs even after being admitted to the University. Read the program pages for these schools at the Universities of your choice and see what they say. Don't be afraid to send them an email to ask questions!

There are also Trade Schools, like Specs Howard in Michigan, that focus solely on Media Arts (Graphic Design, Radio/Television, Broadcasting, etc.) Think of these as the different schools that make up a University.

If you know what career you eventually want, then I recommend searching something like: "Best School for X Job" in Google. You can also narrow it down to a location if you want to stay in your home state. That should bring up some helpful resources to start off with.

Good luck!

If you know what program you want to study, you can start looking at colleges who offer your programs of study. You will need to look at their tuition (in state and out of state will vary) - and then visit the schools to see the campus life.

If you haven’t decided on a program of study yet, then research schools that you like and those who have a good reputation. Things to consider are if you are planning to go to school in your home state or go out of state, are you living on campus or living at home, do you play sports/will you apply through their athletic programs, or not?, what’s your ACT/SAT score and which school will accept your score? Etc.

Hope this helps - good luck.

the number one thing i would say is to do as much research as possible. Visit as many schools as you can and always think about what your future will be like and pick based on that. Think about where you want to be located and ask about the time frame of each course. One thing i would advise is to ask former students about their college classes and pick based off of that.Every school is different and have different majors and requirements. Ask and you should be fine. Good luck hope you decide what best suits you!

I think it depends on the career you are intending to pursue. If you want to be a nurse, then it would be prudent to attend a school that has an accredited nursing program. Some schools are "known" to be stronger in certain majors or disciplines. There are a lot of rankings on this topic. I think it is better to focus on building a balanced list based upon your needs overall. There are various factors to consider such as size of the school, location, cost, acceptance requirements as well as majors offered. There is almost too much information available. My advise it to create your 5 or 6 most important must-haves. Make a list of schools that meet those. Then you can narrow further to a short list by speaking to students who attend the school now to ensure your research is correct.

hello Jordyn first of all I appreciate you wanting to research the best for your education. The important thing is to find the option that will guide you to the profession you want to do in the future and make preliminary preparations in this regard. But if you say that you don't have any information about the profession to choose and you are not sure, my suggestion to you on this subject is to produce options with a high variety of education, so that you can see what you are good at and direct yourself to that subject.

Baljit’s Answer

Hi Jordyn,
you could visit thee colleges of your choice and ask questions to administration. Most admin employees are students of that particular school. So they would know first hand what you should expect from the college. Take a gander at the school websites and research what courses they offer. Each course in the area that you are interested in would be listed online and in the information brochures. So request information about the college and decide what you are interested in studying.

Knowing what you are interested in learning is beneficial in the research on the course you want to take. You could also look into volunteering and talk to those that work there, and ask questions like where did you study and whether it has worked out for them career wise.

You could also do a comparison test online (if available) on some colleges and careers they offer. By doing a college v college comparison might be helpful to you in deciding which route to take in you studies and career.

Misty’s Answer

Hi Jordyn - this is a great question and I don't think there is a right or wrong answer. If you are interested in certain areas or wanting to learn more about them, you should do some research to see which schools offer those programs. It is also very common to enter college thinking you know what you want to do, only to realize that something else may interest you more. I suggest you be flexible and open and soak up as much information as possible.
