How can I gain experience for a tailoring job?
I want to go into tailoring: fixing clothes, altering them, and making entirely new clothes. I'm not sure how to get experience with these things or if a job would train you if you can get one. My question here really is, are there any classes I can take outside of highschool that would give me knowledge on how to work with clothes.

I would look for local tailors and reach out saying that you are interested in the field and would love to sit down with them for some advice. You could offer to buy them coffee and give them a time frame of about 30 minutes and respect their time. If you have people that do not respond or say no, do not be discouraged. You want to get advice from the people who say yes and are excited to answer your questions.
Come with a prepared list of a few questions, including asking how they got into the field and what training they did.
This process can be nerve-racking and uncomfortable, but it's worth it.

To research Information about working with clothes, including designing, tailoring, fixing, & altering, start with Google searching keywords and your city & state, for example: “sewing classes, Rockhill SC,’ “clothing design,” “tailoring and alteration courses.” Based on the results, broaden your search to different areas, or reduce your search with additional keywords. Check out after-school programs at all schools in your area or talk to your school administrator about adding a program. Research community colleges and colleges. Utilize Instagram (Visible Mending) and Facebook to perform searches and ask questions of the App owners. Check out local Fabric and Quilt stores for available classes, even if the class is on making a quilt it still provides techniques and skill-building that may be used in this field. Keep your mind open to opportunities. Consider volunteering for a tailoring shop or other related business in your area, and ask questions about apprenticeship opportunities. Check with your school counselor if there are apprentice programs, if not ask how you can help create one. You make it happen!
