Dominic’s Answer

Computer science and computer engineering encompass several fields including Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Game Design, Information Security, and Human-Computer Interface, all of which have a significant direct impact on society.

For instance, with Data Science we can leverage the data that we collect to predict and avoid catastrophes as well as advance the medical capabilities of our healthcare systems

Game Design provides entertainment and may even help improve the cognitive abilities of users

Information Security enables fraud detection and provides some sense of security for people in a world where digitization is becoming ubiquitous while at the same time bad actors continue to pose a threat

HCI on the other hand empowers people who are often overlooked in the society like the disabled

The list is endless, but the short of it is that there are innumerable opportunities to meet the direct needs of society using technologies developed by Computer Engineers and Computer Scientists. If you are seeking to leave a mark on the world, the technological frontier is wide open!

Ming’s Answer

The human society has been ever pushing the technology boundaries throughout the entire history of the human race. In the very beginning it was stone tools. During the industry revolution era, it was about steam engines, electricity etc. This is the era of computer science, a power tool for automation, to remove more and more mundane and dangerous work from humans so we can move onto more advanced and fulfilling work that can make the best of human creativity. There're still so many things computer science can impact hugely in our society. I can see this computer science era to go on for many years to come.

Jyoti’s Answer

Short answer - it is a demand-supply paradigm. There is a huge demand for people with computing skills, and if more people study computer science they would help in the supply side. For the last 2-3 decades and few more to come, computing would continue to evolve to the extent that it has become mainstream and has applications across all professions. The instances are endless from virtual currency, to automating government processes and in private sector. The world is moving towards systematically organizing the information and data and more jobs are being created in this field. But having said that, computer engineering or computer science knowledge would have to be paired with knowledge of business and one needs to build understanding of the people's need to make an impact to the society.
